College to train building inspectors; SBDC offers free seminars catering to small businesses

Special to the Journal

Mohave Community College is offering a 16-week training program called International Code Compliance Preparatory Class for Residential Basic Building Inspector.

Through this training, the student will be prepared to take the ICC Permit Technician Exam, which is needed for a career in building-code enforcement.

The program includes lectures, class projects, class participation and field trips to a variety of construction sites.

The class starts Sept. 4 and will meet in Room 14 on the Bullhead City campus of MCC on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. Applicants are encouraged to visit the college or call as soon as possible to register as space is limited.

Or more information or to sign up, call Kathy Cooper at (928) 758-2198.

SBDC sets free business seminars

Two free seminars to address pertinent issues affecting small businesses in Mohave County will be held in September in Kingman and Bullhead City, sponsored by the Small Business Development Center at Mohave Community College.

The no-cost seminars will address several issues and offer a number of solutions that can affect owners of small businesses.

The seminars will be held Sept. 10 in Room 200F on the Neal Campus - Kingman from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Sept. 11 in Room 600 on the Bullhead City Campus from 6 to 8 p.m.

The seminar will offer suggestions for small business opportunities, and topics to be discussed are: Resources at MCC's SBDC; small-business loans and resources from the U.S. Small Business Administration; business plans; small-business online training; programs for women; and the new Patriot Express loan program for veterans.

Seating is limited, so those who are interested should sign up early, with a deadline of Sept. 7.

Sponsors of the seminar are the Small Business Development Center at MCC, the Arizona Small Business Development Commission and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

There are three ways to register for either of the seminars: call the SBDC at MCC at (928)-757-0894; email SBDC at lbenton@mohave.edu; or fax the information to (928)-692-3087.

For more information about the seminars or about the SBDC, call 757-0894.

Starbucks comes to campus

Starbucks is going to college. Students, staff and visitors to Mohave Community College will soon be able to buy a cup of gourmet Starbucks coffee, a latte, sandwich or pastry at the on-campus Barnes and Noble bookstores.

“Provision for this expanded service was part of our Barnes and Noble contract, and we are now taking advantage of the opportunity to provide another food service option to our students,” said Bill Lovejoy, vice chancellor for administration at MCC.

“Because of increased enrollment at the college, the traffic count is now sufficient to warrant the basic Starbucks service,” said MCC Chancellor Tom Henry. “As enrollment and traffic increase even more, we will be able to expand the food and beverage service again.”

The Starbucks areas in the bookstores will be self-service with check-out at the Barnes and Noble registers during regular bookstore hours.
